I remember when I started providing therapy in the field during graduate school. I had a wonderful mentor SLP and she worked with many students with severe autism. I loved working with all of my students, but the students with autism were where my passion was. Being able to hear a student say their first word or try something new for the first time- wow that is why I studied so hard all of those years! I also remember the feeling of overwhelm when I was in my second year as a speech therapist. I was working in an applied behavior analysis type setting and I had a student with very severe challenging behavior and no way to communicate. I was overwhelmed to say the least! The student was upset during sessions, did not like the toys I had in my office and despite my best efforts was not communicating. I went to my supervisor to ask for help but the advice was vague. “Work on joint attention.” I was trying! I started to do my own research and learned so much! I wanted to share all of my research, time spent back in school and application of these strategies with all of you today. I hope you enjoy this free webinar where I share what I have learned and how I use it in therapy daily to help those hard to reach students and beat the overwhelm! Just put your email address in the form below and let me share with you my journey and strategies for providing speech therapy to students with autism without overwhelm!
