Activities For Autism – Halloween and Fall

By Rosemarie Griffin

Halloween Activities

Halloween is upon us, and ABA Speech is excited to share information about several fun therapy materials we have to offer through Teachers Pay Teachers with you! Halloween can be fun at all ages, and we want to help you implement holiday-themed activities into your sessions. Holiday-themed therapy materials are not only great for engaging children during therapy sessions but can also easily be used by parents at home to help with carryover of skills. Integrating these activities into your therapy sessions is so much fun!

Adapted Books

ABA Speech has two Halloween themed adapted books we are excited to share with you! These books contain engaging, high interest photographs and simple text, making them a great read for all ages! Each book focuses on different aspects of the holiday so they can easily be used to reinforce Halloween vocabulary and concepts. In addition, each book contains fill-in-the-blank phrases to help students create the story as well as social language questions. The books and questions can be printed, used on a computer or ipad, or used on a smartboard. These adapted stories offer a wonderful seasonal activity for a mixed group of students!

Boom Cards

We also have a fun set of Interactive Halloween Boom Cards with 20 Halloween themed words for students to unscramble along with a slide for the correct answer. This activity is perfect for use in the classroom, during therapy sessions, distance learning, and at home! They can be used for Halloween word work, Halloween literacy centers, remote learning, face-to-face therapy sessions, and at-home practice!

Social Skills

If you have middle or high school aged students, we have an engaging Halloween activity for this age group as well! Through this activity, students have opportunities to discuss Halloween at their language level using social language questions we’ve listed and use this sheet to take a survey all about Halloween. This lesson allows students to generalize their language skills to a more natural environment which also helps with carryover skills!

Book Companion

To help ease your planning for a holiday themed literacy based activity, we also have a new book companion coordinating with Little Blue Truck Halloween! This can be a great activity to use during therapy or in the home environment. Reading a book together is a wonderful way to engage with the student and work on joint attention while embedding literacy into your session! Our book companion offers you no-prep ideas on how to address goals while utilizing this book. For example, you can work on following one-step directions (i.e. “Get the book;” “Lift the flap.”) and also labeling (i.e. truck, pig, cow, etc.) to improve vocabulary and expressive language skills.

Fall Activities

In addition to Halloween themed activities, we also have a comprehensive Fall edition workbook! This includes 46 pages of activities with colorful pictures to address functional language skills. The real-life pictures in this workbook make this activity both a functional and engaging resource for students of all ages. It provides students an opportunity to practice many skills which include the following: labeling, matching, reading comprehension, social skills, categories, synonyms, antonyms, multiple meaning words, vocabulary, comprehension questions, and following directions. These activities are perfect to utilize during therapy sessions or to send home with parents to help with maintaining and carryover of skills. We hope you enjoy using our new Halloween and Fall themed activities at home and in therapy sessions!
