Working with students with autism can be overwhelming! How can I get my student to attend to the materials I am using? How can I goal set, when there are so many areas to work on? Using a robust assessment is a great first step.
The VB-MAPP ( Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program) created by Dr. Mark Sundberg, is my go to assessment! It gives such great information about skills that are often missed on more traditional assessments. It looks at a variety of skills to include but not limited to: requesting, labeling, following directions, matching, filling in the blank for familiar phrases, verbal imitation skills, group behavior.
The picture above was ASHA 2017 in California! I presented about working with an early learner with autism. I used the VB-MAPP as a part of my assessment process and it helped our team create functional goals for our student.
One critical element that has helped me work more effectively with students with autism, has been collaborative services! Working together with other team members to develop and address shared goals, has helped my students learn new skills. Every goal may not be shared, but often times we share most goals. Why you may ask! When we share goals, the SLP is not the only person working on the goal. Our students with autism, need more opportunities to practice skills and they need work on communication embedded across their day.
