Episode #254: Early Intervention and Communication with Marie Martinez
Guest Marie Martinez, a dual-certified SLP/BCBA, joins the show to share her passion for empowering parents and supporting communication in everyday moments. She’s the author of Path for Words: Five-Minute Language Learning Activities for Children Ages 1–3 Years, a book that helps families turn daily routines into powerful language opportunities.
Marie talks about identifying the small moments that matter most—because communication doesn’t just happen at the table with flashcards, it happens all day long. She also offers great advice for anyone passionate about their work (and maybe thinking about writing a book!): if you see a need, fill it. Her work helps parents feel less overwhelmed and more empowered to help their children thrive in their communication journey.

Today’s Guest:
Marie Martinez is one of the few dually certified professionals in speech-language pathology and behavior analysis in the world. She has provided services to the early intervention populations since 2010 and is the author of the book “Path for Words: Five-Minute Language Learning Activities for Children Ages 1-3 Years.” This book has been the #1 New Release in Speech Language Pathology on Amazon since its release date. She is currently a PhD student in the Department of Rehabilitation and Health Sciences at Idaho State University, where she is a graduate assistant in the Helping Adults Talk to Children (HATCH) lab. Before joining the HATCH Lab, Marie worked as an Educational Consultant for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she focused on merging the fields of behavior analysis and speech-language pathology in clinical practice, research, and community outreach. She co-authored print and online curricula, synchronous workshops, and professional development designed to support families by integrating best practices in speech-language pathology and behavior analysis into daily routines. The online and live workshops were provided with asynchronous online support. Marie has presented at various national speech, language, and behavior analytic conferences focused on early intervention curricula, professional development programs, and caregiver training, and is an invited speaker on early childhood language development. She is passionate about bridging the gap between research and practice by providing caregivers with evidence-based speech, language, and behavior strategies. As a mother of a young child learning to communicate, she enjoys integrating these strategies into the precious moments she spends caring for her son. She currently serves as the professional development manager for the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) telepractice special interest group and has been a convention topic committee member for the past three years.
