Consulting as a BCBA in Schools – The Alphabet Soup and the Ethical Code

Often it is said that the language, acronyms and terms in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis are cumbersome and difficult to understand. For some BCBAs, consulting in schools adds a whole new layer of language, acronyms and terms that are unfamiliar. This talk will highlight some of the key terms, how they apply to BCBAs, and how BCBAs can make sense of the terms in relation to the BACB Ethical Code.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

Participants will be able to define some of the most important terms and concepts related to public schools and behavior.

Participants will understand how the concepts associated with terms found in public schools may affect their day to day work.

Participants will be provided with a framework to think about how the concepts and terms found in public schools fit into the BACB Ethical Code.

Ron DeMuesy, M.Ed, BCBA, COBA

Ron holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Miami University and a Masters of Education degree from The Ohio State University where he studied under the advisement of Dr. Nancy Neef and Dr. Bill Heward. Ron is a special education teacher, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a Certified Ohio Behavior Analyst (COBA). In addition to working in the private sector, Ron has spent the majority of his career in public school settings. His current roles include supporting staff in the creation of functional behavior assessments and behavior plans, providing professional development for district staff and mentoring BCBAs, BCBA supervisees and RBTs. Ron has led the implementation of PFA/SBT in schools at the district, building and classroom levels. Outside of his role in school settings, Ron has worked at FTF since 2021 and is currently a Lead Consultant. Ron has worked as an adjunct instructor for multiple universities, as a Subject Matter Expert for the BACB and is currently a third year PhD student at Ohio State.
