Beyond Checklists: Executive Functioning Across the Lifespan

Participants will explore the development and application of executive functioning (EF) strategies through the lens of ADHD and life stage transitions. With an emphasis on age-appropriate and context-sensitive support, the course examines how EF needs change from childhood to adolescence to young adulthood, and how these needs intersect with school, home, and community expectations. Rather than focusing solely on tools like checklists and planners, participants will learn to design EF interventions that anticipate life transitions—such as moving from middle school to high school, or high school to college—and empower clients to create their own supports. This training also examines how the executive functioning abilities of adults in the learner’s ecosystem (e.g., parents, educators, and support staff) can significantly influence outcomes. Special attention is given to prompt fading, skill generalization, and independence-building for the ADHD population.
