I remember when I started providing therapy in the field during graduate school. I had a wonderful mentor SLP and she worked with many students with severe autism. I loved working with all of my students, but the students with autism were where my passion was. Being able to hear a student say their first word or try something new for the first time- wow that is why I studied so hard all of those years!
I also remember the feeling of overwhelm when I was in my second year as a speech therapist. I was working in an applied behavior analysis type setting and I had a student with very severe challenging behavior and no way to communicate. I was overwhelmed to say the least! The student was upset during sessions, did not like the toys I had in my office and despite my best efforts was not communicating.
I went to my supervisor to ask for help but the advice was vague. “Work on joint attention.” I was trying! I started to do my own research and learned so much! I wanted to share all of my research, time spent back in school and application of these strategies with all of you today. I hope you enjoy this free webinar where I share what I have learned and how I use it in therapy daily to help those hard to reach students and beat the overwhelm!
